can someone tell me the difference between 225/70/14 vs 225/60/14? Looking to replace the rubber on my SBP ralleys (68 Barracuda) I have 215/70/14 on there now. Will i run into Issues changing sizes?

Thanks

A 70 tire sidewall is 70% the section width of the tire and a 60 series sidewall is 60% of the section width. At least that is what I have been told over the years.

So the 60 series tire should be slightly shorter in height. Will affect your speedo if on the rear.

225/60-14 = 8.86" section x 24.63" dia.
225/70-14 = 8.86" section x 26.40" dia.
215/70-14 = 8.46" section x 25.85" dia.
However, section width & diameter are theoretical and will vary slightly depending on wheel width and tire manufacturer.

IMHO the 225/60-14 are too short for your car.

I agree. 70 series 14's look right. 75 series 13's or so? The "rubber band" look just doesnt translate to classic body lines IMHO.

So the 225/70/14 will look a bit bigger then the 215/70/14 o have on there now? Or stay with the 215?

Yep. They are just one size up, not a huge difference. I can see no reason why you can't put the 225/70-14s on it.

Thee 60 is shorter and fatter.

would it be worthless to leave the 215/70/14 on the front and put 225/70/14 front? Just a thought

Not quite correct. It only looks fatter because it is shorter. Because 225 is the max cross section width, 225 tires of the same design by the same manufacturer will be the same width when fitted to the same width of rim. RRR is correct about the /60 being shorter than the /70, but not fatter.

Really dumb question. Will a 225/70/14 fit on a 14 x 4.5 rim? Or a 215/70
Not a dumb question at all. Will it fit? Yes. My 66 Dart GT came from the previous owner with a set of 205/70-14 bias-belted tires all around on 4½" wide 14 inch rims. This combination was replaced by 195/70-14 tires on 5½" wide rims.

Will it work? Keeping the car off the ground, yes.
As one would expect a tire to provide good ride, handling, and service life? No. Putting a 215/70 on a 4½" rim pinches the bead of the tire more than it is designed to accommodate. When this happens, tire wear occurs mainly in the center of the tread. Traction degrades more quickly as the road surface gets less stable than would occur with a properly fitted tire. Due to the pinching, the bead of the tire has a compromised grip on the rim. This can lead to sudden deflation when subjected to sufficient lateral forces. While this could happen to any tire regardless of air pressure, a tire that fits properly will stay on longer all else being equal.

The widest tire BFG recommends for a 4½" rim is 185/70-14. In terms of section width, this is close to a 7.35-14 or E-70-14. In terms of load carrying, equivalents are 6.95-14 or D70-14.

What do you run on the rear? I have a 68 notch back and looking to replace my rallies w something for more daily use.
