Ok-here is a basic question for you all--We are new to the race thing so this will help a lot--Steve

How often do you guy's change your oil in the engine and trany???? Do you do it by the number of runs????????

I normally change oil every 4 races. doesn't matter if I go to the finals in all 4, or if I lose 1st round. on the tranny I just change the filter and fluid before the start of each season.

if the tranny is new then I change the filter and fluid after the first 2 races.

Ok--so that means after 8 to 12 runs on the oil ???? Wow that's a lot more than I thought--Steve

thats just what I do. that doesn't mean it's the standard. on an average you have to win about 6 or 7 rounds at my home track to win the race in Modified Eliminator. over the course of 4 races I will usually average going about 15 rounds. then add in 2 practice runs before each race starts for a total of 23 passes give or take.

so if you wanted a round number, about every 20 to 25 runs. thats just me.

I do it every 4 races because its easier to remember, once it becomes habit, than keeping up with how many passes I've made.

hi, If you tally up your runs in your logbook,, then can change depending on passes. we keep tabs on our runs in logbook, change every 30,to 35 passes
oil comes out clean has no trash in it, we use magnets in drain plug, and in return passages in cyl heads, valve springs are biggest producers of trash in a motor.

Save the oil and re use it in daily driver, lawn mower, snowblower etc.Been doing it for years. It will be fine for those items.

We do the engine every 40 passes max. Maybe fewer sometimes. I like the do the trans filter and fluid half way through the year. Transbrakes sure cause lots of heat which is hard on fluid.

I use Brad Penn oil 20w 50 and change my oil every 30 to 35 passes. Cut the filter each time! As for the trans, I use aluminum parts and change that oil & filter [band adjustment] every fifty passes. [904 trans/deep pan] I also use one quart of SAE non detergent 30 weight oil when installing the trans fresh. I will also add one quart of "30" weight on the second trans service of the year. Otherwise I use the type "F" fluid most of the time, but have used the ATF + 4 with no problems using either. [never a shifting issue]

You just made me giddy-Rob-Thanks for the pics that thing is SWEEEEEEEEEEET--Did you fab the rear "wing" or did u buy that somewhere--Steve

That '65 is absolutely SICK ! You just raised the bar for me , and while I really like the car , I think it was totally unreasonable of you to put that kind of pressure on me. LOL
I know someone makes a wing specifically for the '66 and I think it will fit '63 through '66. Damned if I can remember who though.......I read about it after I did mine.
This is a generic " trim to fit " from Suncoast race cars

Change everything (oil, trans, diff) at beginning of season using synthetic fluids, then the oil again somewhere halfway through the season. I've averaged over 150 passes/year for the past 2 years. It may be overkill but is worth it for me since I also do a few thousand street miles on top of the racing (I rarely trailer my car). Many guys I know just change the oil once a year and trans fluid every other year with good luck. You just need to figure out what works for you.

So the next question is,If atf doesn't lubricate at all how does the trany survive ?????

have no idea...that is what i read and have been told.....i dont put any motor oil in the trans...

try google.....

the 30 weight non detergent motor oil helps the trans fluid lubricate the bushings/needle bearings and other bearing/bushings in the transmission. Trans fluid does a good job, but our transmissions are subjected to "just a little more abuse" than their brothers in street vehicles. I read about this some 25 years ago in a article called "torque flite talks" I have also mentioned this to a few very quality trans builders...they smile and say very little about it...guess I'm on the right track. I have never had shift quality issues using 30 weight non detergent oil. As for the wing, Competition Engineering kit. Just made it work with a bit of TLC! Thank you for the words of kindness Oh, by the way...this is my High School car. yes I have owned this car since 1969! The vinal top is still the OEM....again, all I use is Kiwi black shoe polish on the top from time to time...I know I'm crazy!
