I remember these in my neighborhood ..until the school gave us these glossy religious ones, that you better not write on .. my bag covers had pictures of cars pasted on them.... go figure. 
I remember them from the Catholic school I went to for grades 7 and 8. "Mojave Greeeen!" I screamed while running back to the truck on one of many summer evening snake hunting adventures in the old desert homeland. A variety of Rattlesnake in the southwest US. No anti-venom at the time, so considered most deadly of rattlesnakes in US.

There is an old gas station on in WV, still in operation, the price on the pump is in quarts.Old timers will remember these signs. When pumps couldn't read over a dollar per gallon. Long for the days of gas under a dollar, and lead.
