What does it take to switch from a column gear selector to a floor mounted? Are they cable controled? Another question, I have seen people that can shift gears manually with an auto?

Going to a aftermarket floor mounted shifter is cable operated. Most like B&M run the cable towards the motor and loop back around to the trans which can be an issue with headers. I cheetah makes one that routes to the rear of the car and comes in behind the trans. Here is mine.

As for as shifting an auto manually. You need a manual valve body. I wouldn't recommend for the street.

Awesome info, thanks! Makes sense about the cable facing towards rear rather than forward.

The factory console shifter is basically two rods, a bell crank, and a lever. If you score one of these, be sure to get the kickdown linkage, too.

If you recall the Slap Stick of the 70 E-body, there is a limited amount of control of an automatic without resorting to a manual valve body. It just depends on how much control you want/need.
