Bought a 68 440hp big block...stock as a rock 0.30 over and 284 duration purple 114 lsa cam , 10.5:1 compression , holley street dominator intake..but my question is..Some people are saying the 440hp 375hp / 480 torque was overated from factory , ans some says it was right on ! I know that the 340 had a bit more , the hemi too...new to the gigantic 440 history!! Tell me youre dyno stories or experiences thanks guys

This is a guy I follow on Youtube, does a lot of Mopar stock type builds and has a SuperFlow dyno. This is a '67 440 hp build they did for a GTX, they did break-in and initial pulls with a few non-stock parts, then afterwards the customer brought in stock carb, ignition, and exhaust manifolds to get a genuine test. Not sure if they've posted another video with the all stock test, interested in seeing it.

Good article...we need to keep in mind those "high performance" versions of B/RB engines were in a very mild state of tune. I know firsthand there's a lot of little tweaks that can make a huge difference and wake them up.
A bid huge cam.

First, your engine isn't "stock as a rock" for a country mile. The 284 cam is large by huge compared to stock. Stock didn't come with a Street Dominator. The 68 440 was also not rated 10.5 compression. That's nowhere near stock.

I gotta go w/ this post ^^

A production engine was a crapshoot. If everyone from the carburetor and distributor vendors, to the machining group, the assembly group, and all suppliers and assemblers were perfect - they would be able to reach that level with careful tuning. However, the factory ratings were a little misleading. The engines were tested, max tuned for each step in the test, then the individual maximum readings were put together into one "test". This was common for all makes to do - but an engine that is tuned to make max power at 3K won't make max power at 5500.
With tolerance and quality control stacking, there were more engines below those figures than above. Careful blueprinting and tuning could exceed those figures though.

If you ever ride in a 440 commando that is tuned properly, you won't 2nd guess the numbers.

Its 030 over with a purple cam....with headers , im guessing 400 hp and 500 of torque , if the base factory numbers are real of course

I second that, it's difficult to get an idea of the HP a 440 puts out because the torque is so intense. When you have 400+ lb-ft basically off idle all the way to even just 4000 RPM you won't be able to tell if it actually puts out 350, 375, or 400 HP unless you're doing actual timed runs. From my experience it's one of those engines that even the lowest-performance smogger piece of "junk" 440 is a torque monster with impressive performance. 250 HP doesn't sound like much but my cousin's 1972 440 Polara would lift the left front fender about 4 inches when you stepped on the gas from all the torque, no way a V6 Toyota Camry with 250 HP could do the same thing.

Also like @451Cuda said even the Hi-Perf engines were in a very mild state of tune from the factory and they have so much displacement that the power increases you get from upgrades are HUGE. Just a cam swap with all other factory parts will put it over 450 HP.
