I'm new to the forum and in need of help. I have a rebuilt 71 360: new ring,pistons,cam,values,v.seals. I have put about 1500 miles on it. It is lossing oil and its not leaking on the floor or anywhere else. I notice white smoke on crank up (not alot) and when speeding up 55+. Seems like it is only coming out of the right exhaust.I have gone though about 6 quarts since the rebuild. There is no peformance loss. Can any one point me in the right direction?

Thanks
Aaron

If you were burning oil, I would think the smoke would be a blueish grey color. White smoke tends to be from condensation.

Pull your spark plugs one at a time, and inspect them. It sounds like it's burning it. The new seals would more than likely seal even with marginal guides, so I'd be more inclined to say its a ring issue. Also, rings tend to smoke more on load, rather than idle and start up. The plug will be black and wet looking compared to the ones burning well.

Moper I will take a look and let you know. Thanks for the help.
Oh yeah the rings were brand new and installed right (right side up).

Six quarts in 1500 miles is most definitely in the excessive catagory. Just based on that alone I would have to go with a ring/cylinder problem. You should definitely see wet plug(s) with this amount of oil consumption.

I have seen this happen when the intake manifold gasket did not seal off well and it would suck oil out of the engine to 1 or more cylinders. This will usually cause a rough idle (vacumn leak). Also would check the PVC system, if aftermarket valve covers were used make sure the shield has been installed on the PVC side. If it was this though it would probably smoke out both exhaust. Good luck.

I had a similar problem with plug fouling in cylinders 6 & 8 due to intake gaskets. I also had smoking on the right side. You can check this fairly easily. with the engine warmed up and running, spray carb cleaner along the intake manifold where it seals to the head. If there is a change in RPM's then a leak is present. If not then you may have other problems.

Here is the number two plug and the threads look like they have a little oil on them.
