Removing a 318 from a van

-
I just pulled a 360/46rh from a 90 b350. Unless they changed alot (which I don’t think they did) just pull the grill/ radiator/support/ heads / intake/ alternator etc and pull engine and trany out the front . Hardest part is all the accessories/wiring/smog stuff on the 90. Yours is much simpler . Engine and trany slid out way easier than I expected.

I took mine out the front on my 2002 B1500. Pulled the kegger for clearance and ran a short chain across to each head. It was tight but plenty doable. No need to screw around with taking the trans out doing it this way.

So- update on the van. As referenced above, the engine cross member will come out like our abody k frames and I can drop the suspension with it and engine and trans thru the bottom.
Also the damn thing is Unibody! It’s a frame that’s made of what looks like 12ga sheet metal pretty thick flanged and welded to the floors. Full length also.

I will keep you all posted when this engine comes out.

I took several motors out of B vans. I aways took them out of the passenger door, taken off. As stated, disconnect all front equipment, plus carb and valve covers. Motor needs to be rotated to clear dog house opening. Need a tight chain to clear dash. Just remember to change oil pan and pickup from the 318 to your 340 or a pan from a 360 truck or van before installing if it is to be a 360 swap. Motor mounts are also different from a 318 to a 340 or 360. I tweak mine to fit a 340. A short oil filter will fit without the adapter.

I always used the long filter on my vans. No adapter though I never ran headers on mine.

So the update for now is the engine swap is on hold. I drove the van the other day and it’s still pretty peppy. I’m going to work all the bugs out- aka fluids and filter changes and register it and then take it from there. Once all is done I will drop the engine out the bottom and swap it and the transmission out. I’m on the hunt for a rebuild able core for an over drive unit and possibly rear axle change.

The engine I’ve got ready that I could drop in - I do not want to pull heads or anything other than oil pan and pick up to take apart- so all though swapping thru passenger side is an option… I’m going to try thru the bottom. Less work in my opinion because suspension needs to come apart anyhow.
Thank you for all your advice and recommendations.
