The paint on my console is cracked and peeling.
Is lacquer thinner the best way to remove paint off plastic?

It will depend on what the binder is in the plastic.

Do test patches where it will not matter if the plastic disintegrates.

Soda blasting or dry ice blasting might work without removing the texture.

I’ve tried using lacquer thinner on a spot and it doesn’t seem to affect the plastic.
So is that the way I should go?

What does it do to the paint?

Test it on the textured area on the back side that will be under the dash and not visible.

Be sure to check that the surface of plastic does not wipe off.

I have seen some chemicals soften plastic and then when wiped with a paper towel the towel spreads and smears into the plastic and others that never let the plastic surface become hard ever again.

Just be careful

Lacquer thinner worked the best at removing the paint but the process of rubbing a rag soaked with thinner on the console was extremely slow.
I found the quickest method to remove the paint was to lay the console on its side and then apply a thick cotton cloth (folded to hold more thinner) and then applied to a section of the console.
I then applied wax paper over the cloth to prevent the thinner from evaporating, and then a heavy cotton cloth over it so the wind wouldn’t cause problems (I worked outside as I didn’t want to do this inside and fumigate the wife accidentally)
I let the area soak for a few minutes and then scrapped off most of the softened paint with a sharp plastic scraper.
Then to get the paint out of the grooves, I carefully rubbed the surface with a small brass brush, WITHOUT applying any pressure.
I then wiped the area with a clean cloth and lacquer thinner

Was your console originally tan?

I have a blue one that will become black down the road
