Like machinists, BUT the knowledge of how metal really bends and cuts is what make or breaks a part.

Like the automotive engineer who has never wrenched on a car, the designer who creates the CAD to run on the machines had better know how metal moves.

I agree, and it's not necessarily a bad thing. It's just the normal progression as we develop new technology. Like @Dana67Dart mentioned, understanding the fundamentals of any trade is crucial, whether you're doing it by hand or telling a robot what to do.
