The holes in the stamped steel retainers that are used to secure the rocker arms are offset so that there is a "short" side and a "long" side. Which way should I orient the long and the short side when installing them on a 1984 LA 360? The manual show where to locate the long and the short retainer, but not which way to orient the long and the short side.Thanks.

There is no certain direction. They must be stamped offset by machine error. Unless they stamped newer sets to put the long side toward the spring side to keep the retainers against the flat side of the rocker when the valve opens. That would be a guess but I never saw older sets offset.
