I got a roller LA motor from mid-80s fifth avenue. It was running when it was pulled (seen video) I want to do a cheap refresh, similar to @RustyRatRod /6 build.

Just to get our 69 barracuda on the road. I started tearing into it, just to clean things up and re-gasket it, and the lifters will not come straight out of their bores, they all appear to only come up so far.

I haven't taken the camshaft out or the front cover, just the intake, rockers and push rods out. Attached is a picture do they come out the bottom of the bores?

I'm not familiar with roller motors but this seems weird.

Once you get the cam out, take a brass drift or a small wooden hammer handle and knock um out from the bottom. It's just oil varnish that has um stuck. They'll come right out.

No experience with the Mopar roller lifters, but I’ve taken plenty of small block ford roller lifters out of their bores. Unless there’s some sort of interference, they should pull right out. They could have a varnish buildup on them that’s keeping them from freely pulling out. I’ll be interested in here with others have to say.

That's all it is. Just varnish.

Rusty said oil varnish. Wouldn't surprise me, this thing is pretty grody. Lol. I'll know more when I get the cam out. I'm just taking my time and keeping everything in order.

I'm hoping to reuse the cam/lifters.
I have rebuilt heads for it
I have MSD distributor/6a from another build
New freeze plugs
New flowkooler water pump
Regasket it
Maybe bearings
Send it - lol

You probably can. Just be careful tapping on the rollers when you tap them out. They'll be fine. Them things last forever.

like RRR said, you can poke 'em thru the bottom. if you wanna pull them from the top the heads have to be off.

hit that thang with some key-ro-seen and they should wiggle right on out.

you gonna do a cam while it's all apart? (do it! do it! do it!)

I'm trying to keep this cheap as possible. I want this car to be just a cruiser. I did a full restomod on the Dart I had and after I got done, I realized, I didn't really enjoy the car (after 10 years of building it)

This will be a driver, no paint and body and a stock/mild motor.

i feel ya.

how about a very small cam? like a 360 2bbl .405/.410 240/248 or .410/.425 248/256 110

either of those would wake that puppy right up...

Yeah, it's varnish. If you still got the oil pan on it or a drip tray under it, spraying the valley with diesel fuel with a little ATF4 (lots of detergents in both!) and letting it soak helps. Still usually have to rotate the lifters in the bore to help break it loose.

Good idea. I still have the oil pan on. I'll put some ATF in there.

Isn't there a tool called a lifter puller?

Yeah, definitely not in that case! That is, unless it’s stuck together and you’re tearing it apart…
