Just thinking out loud here.

Stock; Slant 6 car and 3 spd. manual tranny w/7.25 rear Lets say I want to go to a mild 318.

Option 1: engine swap only. What would need to be done to install a 318 to the stock 3 spd manual trans? lets just talk clutch/linkage and 318.

Option 2: engine swap and install a 4 spd. heavier tranny?

how available and expensive are the parts to do this swap? thanx

Either way there, "I" would go the larger V8 flywheel and clutch. From there, it's the obvious. Correct bellhousin, correct clutch fork and Z-bar and linkage. Jaimie at Passon Performance is real sharp and a super guy. He can help you nail down EXACTLY what you need with no question. what year model is the car? If it's not the A230 3 speed, I wouldn't even think about stickin a 318 in front of it. Far as the bellhousin, you can find one with the dual bolt pattern for either the 3 or 4 speed. That's kinda convenient.

The bolt pattern to the bell housing is different from a 3spd to a 4spd?

I had a 318 3spd in a Duster once. The levers were constantly getting jammed going from the 2 to 3rd gear. Very much a pain since I had to cost to a stop, reach under the car, strighten it out and get going again.

Jamie Passon also gets my nod. I do beileve he can surpply all the swap parts. If not, theres Brewers as well, Mancini has parts, etc.......

Aluminum bells pop up from time to time here. IDK how much a 4spd trans will go for.
For certainly, go for the bigger clutch set up even with a stock 318. You'll need a flywheel for this.

Yup. The trans bolt pattern from 3 to 4 speed is different. And don't forget all the three different size bearing retainers too. It can get pretty cunfrooshin if you ain't careful.

I'd upgrade the rear end .....I don't like a 7 1/4 even behind a slant 6! Disc brakes would be on my list too.
