So I'm always looking to do some cool stuff to the duster and I have recently been looking into turbo charging my /6. Now it already runs quite well (21MPG hwy) and I've done the usual stuff like the super six, the fuel line mod, and currently working on installing an electric fan. Now I figure I can pull a turbo setup for somewhere in the range of $300-$400 and get between 60-100 additional hp out of it depending on the amount of boost I run....

The question is (am I crazy? ) should I really be thinking about this or should I take a step away from the thinking cap? This is for my daily driver and I'm not so sure I want to add the complexity to a thing of simplistic beauty.
 
You are not crazy... proceed with caution and I am sure your daily driver will still be your easy daily driver, only faster!

Start off with a rich mixture... It would be nice if you could monitor the temperature inside the headers!
 
"I" think your idea is perfectly logical.

I believe it will cost you more than 300-500, but to each their own.

You are definetly on the right track with maintaining your current gas mileage and increasing seat of the pants Fun.

I recommend a 60-1 turbo with a .86 exhaust A/R for your /6. You have good amount of packaging area with a /6 that is for sure.

A turbo may as well be a second engine for th trouble they can cause. They have water cooled oil fed bearings. When steam pours out the tailpipe you wont really know if its the turbo or the engine i.e. head gasket. People dont realize they can turn the engine off and be in and out of a convienence store before the turbo stops turning. It got no oil or water during that period and is bound to fail.
Thats just my concept of turbos though.

Get a device called a turbo timer.
It keeps your engine running for a set time after you turn off the key.
If someone attempts to release the parking brake, the car will shut off.
They are great for increasing the life of your turbo.
I had one on my Nissan, and it was nice to be able to run in somewhere, and have my car take care of itself.

from what I have seen,
I would enjoy the thought of a small turbo that would
be there when I needed it.:burnout:
But it does seem like if it was a turbo car,
the turbo was first to go out. But that was old school.

Ask any Grand National/ Turbo T-Type owner how they are as a daily driver.
Of course, they have electronic fuel injection and ignition developed by GM.
Definitley a fun ride with good gas mileage.
 
whew, a long day of reading and thinking, I've gotta try it! I'm not looking for 400HP, just something like 4-5lbs of boost to wake 'er up a little. It has to be fool ( me ) proof so I'll be keeping it very mild.
I helped a friend put twin turbos in a g35 and it went to 385hp with 6lbs of boost.
Prine, There is one guy on that site running 20LBS of boost on a STOCK 225 pushing something like 259 HP at the wheels!!!!
 
I would look for a good used GN or Syclone/Typhoon turbo. They are sized small on those engines, so they are likely to be almost spot on, for our similiarly sized,
Depending on how your compartment lays out, take a tight J bend, from the exhaust manifold, over to turbo. This will allow you to locate, front or back, and side to side, for best clearance.
Make sure you are up to snuff on oil feed and drainback, which should be a fairly simple process.

Biggest obstacle will be fuel and timing control.

Why not run a centrifugal supercharger? Less plumbing and oiling worries and boost comes up on higher rpms like a turbo so you don't ping it to death.
 
Ive used a super charger,and intercooler off a 90 something thunderbird super coupe v6 on a 340 dart before.It works great,with little to modify,no oiling,its all self contained like a gear box,and you can raise or lower the boost depending on what pulleys you bolt on the front.Ive seen this same blower on a 225 on fabo before,i believe,and the guy said it works perfect for this size engine.Youll still have your daily driver gas milage,and the extra performance your looking for,for even less cash.The turbo coupes are fairly old now,so the superchargers are cheap,the ones were used on grand prix,front drive regals,etc,with only minor changes.

I would love to see this system. I would think think the mounting, and fuel delivery/super charger placement would be a chore.

Your killin' me dude. Now instead of a small block, I am leaning (pun intended) this way...8)
I am already starting to process the fitment and location of everything. Time to get started!
