I'm considering some updates/modifications to the 318 in my '71 Dart GT (with A904, MP electronic ignition (orange box), dual exhaust (factory manifolds, FlowMaster 40s, and 2 1/4" pipes to the rear bumper), 3.23:1 sure-grip 8 3/4" rear end).

I've got an Edelbrock LD4B intake manifold and an Edelbrock 1406 carburetor planned to go on this spring/summer.

While I'm at it I'm considering a Hughes whiplash cam/lifters/springs (all suggested by the folks at Hughes).
I also thought I should replace the timing chain/gears & water pump.

Can all of these modifications be made with the engine in the car?
What else would you all suggest?

Yes, definetly doable in the car. You will need to pull the radiator and condenser if you have a/c. Lots of work but well worth it!

Yes they can be done, though, you will find swinging in the cam very very tight. The post infront of the rad will probably get in the way. But you should be able to swing it in.

The plan of parts is a good one. (Don't like super 40's, just my opinion)

When you replace the timing chain, MP has a timing chain tenteiner (Humm sp!?!?) It will also replace the cam retainer plate, it's designed that way.
A viscous fan maybe?
IMO, I'd use the Chrome box or a MSD or equal ignition.

if you can find a '72 or is it a '73 340 sir cleaner, the one with a trap door cauum operated, get that factory air cleaner. I beileve theres 1 or 2 here for sale. Worth the price. Use a K&N with it. (I'll never get rid of mine!)
Use the Edelbrock thick carb gasket under the carb. OE Carters came this way from the factory to prevent fuel from boiling and overheating the aluminum carb. Very very well worth it!

Make sure you use a break in oil or break in oil additive.

I may be wrong here, but isnt the LD4B for the 273?? Again, I apologize if I am wrong...just "trying" to give you a heads up. Someone with more brains than I will chime in!
Also, IMO change your 318 manifolds.

The LD4B is correct for 273-318 sized ports. I would put a timing chain tensioner on it while your at it.
