What is the best kit out there to convert from 9" drums to a BBP disk brake set up? I have been looking at the Mancini kit, seems to be the way to go, but wanted your guys opinion.

I'm not looking to go with used parts off of a 73 and up. Simply looking for the best "bolt on" type kit to get me going.

The MBM kit? It’s just a 73+ kit. No used parts but it’s all factory design stuff.

Call Cass at DoctorDiff. He can get you a 73+ conversion kit with better parts and far better technical support.

Interesting commentary from a guy who's too broke to drive his car. Maybe if you spent less money on bling you could afford to race? Or is this not you?

Seems pretty simple to me. The OP has a 9" drum set up, which means he has the early, weaker design for the lower ball joint. Guys have snapped those undersized lower ball joint bolts.

So, instead of paying $500 or so for all new '73+ parts including the improved later spindles, he spends $800 for just the rotors, calipers and hubs and has to keep the weak lower ball joint and 9" spindles with the small wheel bearings. Oh, and the hub diameter is 3" on those Wilwoods, so any wheel with a hub bore less than 3.050" won't even fit. So any factory or factory replica wheel won't fit.

I mean seriously. Get all this for around $500 depending on your options

Or get this for $800 and still have to buy new brake lines. And wire your hubs together. And run your undersized lower ball joint bolts and small wheel bearings. And run wheels with a hub bore of 3.050" or bigger.

Doctor Diff is the best resource for stock type brake swaps. He has all of the necessary parts and his prices are fair.

Without knowing it, stock is exactly what the OP was looking at when he was talking about the kit at Mancini, a 73+ based kit made by MBM. Making DoctorDiff’s kit a better choice for what he’s doing.

Besides, the boring old stock mopar calipers generate more clamp force than those Wilwoods you’re always trying to talk people into. The factory 9” drum spindles they use are a disaster with their undersized lower ball joint bolts. And with a 3” diameter hub the Wilwoods won’t work with the vast majority of wheel options for these cars- none of the factory wheels work with them anymore. They’re simply not a good choice for most people.

But hey, why listen to the OP when you can hock an overpriced, underperforming Wilwood kit because you think it looks pretty on your garage/trailer queen? Just because you bought the hype doesn’t mean the rest of us have to.

I like the Wilwood kit for a few reasons....It can retain the 5x4 bolt pattern and it doesn't push the track width (only .20) like the 73 and later set up. I have a 69 Valiant I am wanting to convert to disc and a 74 Dart Swinger that is a factory disc car. It was difficult getting wheels to look right on the 74.

Wilwood is a brake manufacturer. Most of the kit companies are just sourcing chinese parts (not that most brakes bought today at your local parts store aren't chinese).

It may surprise you to find out that the original poster of this thread has 9” drum spindles. So it’s VERY relevant information for him. This isn’t about you.

All I have to say about this is what I’ve already said. The Wilwoods require a wheel center bore of 3.050”. That prevents using all of the factory SBP wheels. It also eliminates most aftermarket wheels. So, if you’re using the Wilwoods to keep your SBP, you had better verify your rims will fit over a 3.050” hub. Not many do.
 
Well this thread took a turn.

I’ll be going through dr.diff. I’ve run Wilwoods in the past and currently on my drag car, first off they aren’t great.. and they’re overpriced.

I will be sticking with a stock type set up for this car.
