Oops! Sent photo before asking question. I just pulled the speedo gear and holder from my 71 Duster and I’m wondering if I need another seal. The orange seal looks good. There was some brittle black material at the outer edge that fell apart when the adaptor came off. I have not touched this adaptor since the late 1980s so I don’t recall if I added the black sealant at that time. Is the orange seal the only one I need? Is there an outer black seal that I need?

For the record…I replaced a stripped 34 tooth gear (approx 1987) with an 40 tooth orange gear from a salvage yard - not knowing that the color was a code for the # of teeth. I’m finally installing the correct 34 tooth gear. My speedo has been way off for 25 years.

Orange o-ring is the seal for the outer body, there is an inner shaft seal. Guessing you may have added something to the outer way back when.
