Ok, i just got back from vacation and started to work on my new dart (1970, auto trans, 318 ) When it is in Park or Neutral, it will idle fine (around 1000 rpms or lower if i adjust it), but when i put it in gear, the car will drop the idle to about 450 then try to die if i dont keep the idle up by the peddle. I have always been a fuel injected junkie, and havent touched a carb in over 10 years. Is there a way to set a seperate curb idle and drive idle?

Other info,

I have not yet (but am going to) check the PCV and Fuel filter.
I have a Holley carb and the plugs and wires all look good.
The Distibutor and all internals look good.

If i two foot it, it will run like a champ all over town..

I dont think it has antything to do with it, but the power stearing is not working either, that is the second thing to look at. Suggestions on that would help also.. but not needed yet. I have already checked for fluid, it is nice and tight and steers (just really hard to do so)

If the car is running rich, replace the power valve, and reset the mixture screws.Check the float levels and adjust them if needed. If its been sitting for a while, the gaskets can be dry and may need to be replaced. You could have a vacum leak, carb base or hose, and you may need a idle up soleniod to increase the idle when in drive,Mrmopartech

Check the timing. A stock 318 should idle lower than 1000 rpm. Check the vacuum. Might have a vacuum leak somewhere.

OK, without making my self sound like a complete idiot, here i go....

I have a holley carb, not sure of its size or model.. the only numbers i can find are anywere are p-80 and 11716.. Oh yeh, its a 4bbl with elec choke and vacume secondaries.,

I have not found any vacume leaks anywere.
The i may be wrong, but i dont think the timing is the issue becuase it will idle fine in park or neutral, but I will be glad to check that out tommorw (in another 5 degree day).
This car came from Colorado so I think it may be leaned out.. but I am not sure why it will idle but not in gear. I am not the brightest when it comes to carbs, but I am learning fast. I am not sure how to test to see if it is running lean or rich. I am sorry, i probably sound like a noob here, but trust my I know what I am doing, just not on carbs.

Thanks for the tips, and instructions would be great. The guy i bought it from drove it all the time before I bought it and had it shipped here, but I cant fathom that altitude change would cause it idle out of gear and stall in gear. Unless of course, the guy was lieing..

If you have power brakes you might have a bad vacuum booster.
Set your parking brake and disconnect and plug the vacuum hose from the intake to the booster. Then put it in gear and see if it will idle.

I will try that first thing in the morning, wouldnt i notice a problem like that though, i mean, it seems to stop just fine.

ok, I reset the fuel mixture and the timing and now it is running like a champ. It is idleing about 750-780 and drops only about 25-50 rpms when put in gear. Currently I am waiting on a buddy to bring over his timing light and vacuum gauge to dial it in the rest of the way. thank you for all the help.

I was just gonna say..."it's too lean..open the mix screws a tad, and slow the idle speed down"..lol. Nice job..Sharp car too..My '71 will look similar to that soon...
