with a short duration camshaft of 210 or 214 at .050in and 8.5:1 compression, what would initial timing be..15 or so?
Wondering how these hi torque RV style cams perform on the street?

If your looking strictly for mileage/efficiency, yes they work well by not bleeding anymore compression off at lower rpms. I think if your looking for some performance, a cam in the 220/[email protected] range with a lsa in the 110/112 range will give you some power over a wider range and decent drivability/mileage. Along with a aggressive timing curve that you'll need also.......And that very well may be from 15* to as much as 20* or a hair more initial, imo. Cylinder pressure and fuel quality will end up dictating your final numbers.
 
the old generic 214/224 @50 443/465 112 lsa cam works real well.when my 340 first went in the dart thats the cam i had.good vac,mpg,slight lope at idle,and lots of torque over a broad range.
 
next project will be about 8.5:1 w/3.23
will have to be short duration...would 218 - 220 kill lo end torque?
 
If you want monster torque with low compression in a heavy car use the older Mopar P4286669 cam package it was 430 lift with 260 duration and 110 centerline. I used to use these all the time. Last one I put in was a 73 Roadrunner with a 8.5 comp 340 and an automatic. It would squall the tires for blocks. Pulls hard to about 5000 rpm.
 
Thanks ...that sounds perfect for a street only car, and would probably work well with a stock 340 converter that stalls at about 2250 - 2400 which i have.

Is this cam still available? I tried a search , but no-go.
 
Crower Baja Beast. Specs:advertised,250/254,@ .050,200/208,lift,.423/441. My choice,watched it go mid 13's @101 at Famoso. Passes smog,in Ca. Really,a nice grind.

thats the cam in the wheeler...nice
 
..seems everybody wants long duration and hi lift but i think these short duration cams would be the ticket for a street car...who else have tried this style of cam..what were the specs and how did it perform?
how about the small voodoo 213/220 and .454/.475 1000 -5500
or Crane h 260-2 204/216 and .427/.454 1200 - 4800

I agree. I'd really like to see what a quick ramp rate and closer duration will do on the street. I like the Hughes cuts, because of the wider lobes and lift rate. They require their own springs. I'm very tempted to run this one in my 318, but I'm not sure how it will affect MPG against a stocker.
 
We used to build a lot of small blocks for car projects, used to sell about 1 a month at swap meets. Ended up using a lot of 360's and low compression 340's just because they were cheap. I would always be looking for cheap cams at swap meets and the low lift stuff was always cheap not to mention great for the engines I was building. Everybody had a grind that was similar but just about anything that was around the stock 1968 340 cam specs was good. I probably still have a couple around. We would pick up a cheap Duster or Dart and my cuz would paint it and I would slap together a motor with small cam, 4 barrel and headers with some pretty valve covers. All the cars had to do was shine and squeal the tires and we could sell it.
 
A 340 @ 8.5-1 & 3.23 gears can use a cam up to something like a 218 duration @ .050 without any noticable issue in missing low end torque. I used a Crane split (with that I take duration above) in a 318 with no low end loss worth noting. Same gear ratio and stock tires I. A stock low comp '79- 318 automatic.

That small Voodoo looks like a good fit for 8.5:1/3.23
.213/.220 .454/.475 1000 - 5500 and i'm probably going to try it.
 
Good choice. Make sure you degree it when installing.
