I am thinking about selling the 340 in my 70 Dart. I am in the process of body and paint and it is looking like it is going to take longer than I thought to even get the engine bay shot. (Mainly due to time and unforeseen life roadblocks). The motor was finished a year ago and only has about 100 miles on it. I was working on the tune here and there, when I realized the suspension on the car was worse than anticipated, making it hard to drive. It is now out of the car and on the stand, waiting for the engine bay paint.

My question is should I sell the 340 and do a 5.9 swap, when I’m ready? I know the 5.9 makes good power for relatively cheap. Thoughts?

I'm not tied to the fact that I have a 340 and thought maybe someone who is doing a resto could get more use out of it.

The motor is:

68 block

KB 167 .040

Comp 268H

Forged cranked

RPM Airgap

J Heads 2.02 Intake

Adjustable rocker arms

Edelbrock Thunder AVS 650

MSD ignition.

Well you have a rebuilt 340, why build another engine?
Do you think you will make enough to cover a new 360 if you sell your 340?

I think the main concern was leaving the motor on the stand for an undetermined amount of time. It is in a un-insulated closed garage. It does have oil and coolant. I turn the oil pump over with my drill every couple weeks to keep the oil flowing. However, I am worried that it is going to get damaged or rusted from sitting.

I am not sure how much I could realistically get for the 340, to be honest, but I know about how much I'd be in the 5.9 for based on talking to magnummopar

A bird in the hand!!!....

Don't sell anything until your plans are complete, you may change your mind and not be able to turn back!! JMO!!

I have a 340 in my 69 Dart, and I think it is a very sweet running powerful engine. If I were you, I would keep it. Oil the cylinders as well as spinning the pump. You will spend more money to build the new engine than you will get for the 340.

I have a 360 that's been on a stand for about uhh well longer than I want to admit. I put it in a big old thick plastic cover, oiled the engine down all over the block. I also have the heads off and in plastic bags and oiled as well. No problems here. If your turning the motor over and keeping the parts lubed esp those rubber parts, your golden in my book.

And what Furyus said.

I also agree. and..... I too, bet you have way more in the 340 than you sell it for.

I would not be too quick to make a decision to sell it off. nothin wrong with going with a different engine deal, but, money wise for me, it would all have to make a lot of $$ sense.

I think in the long run you'd probably regret selling the 340. Especially since it is already rebuilt. If you want EFI, when your car is ready to go, you could add a FiTech in place of your carb for a fairly reasonable price and the wiring is more simple than a 5.9 stock EFI.

I think ya'll are right. Thanks for setting my mind at ease on the part of the motor just sitting. :) The FItech definately seems like a viable option for the future.

DONT SELL IT MAN
I sold mine 3 years ago and went with your plan and built a 360 that 340 was a 70 dart engine too
my only regret is I didn't rebuild that motor those old 340:s could take a pounding and buzz likea bee call me I might trade you 6800.00 in mine , its a rocket but I think the 340 woulda rocked it rebuilt , and try to find another 1 340:s Rock and you have room for nice headers your 3 k away from a 475 hp 340 then add the nitrious Your gone my opinion 340 lover

No question in my mind-keep the 340, unless of course you want to reinvent the wheel.

I look at this a little different. I'd rather have the 340 sitting there ready. With my luck, I'd sell the 340, then take another couple of Months/years getting a 360, and all the assorted little parts to make it back to what you have right now. Along with the different seasons limiting when you can work on it, and drive it. Might be longer than that... Juse my .02 cents....
