I have a 74 duster, /6 about to be a 440. I am planing on buying a schumacher engine swap kit (headers, k-member mounts, torque strap) and Im going to run purple hornies... this is a street car... so my question is I want a loud exhaust, and the old style glasspack crackle. so I was thinking about running small exhaust pipes to get the good back pressure and loud pops, how small could I go? i figure as long as you have a nicely tuned carb it should be ok to have a lot of backpressure. ( so you still get the good sound ) any ideas? suggestions? comments?

thanks a lot!

Believe me, you'll get plenty of crackle with glass packs without resorting to choking your engine with a small exhaust. Put some reducers on the tailpipes and run it somewhat rich if you really feel you have too.

That's really not a good idea to go to smaller exhaust to maybe get more noise. A 3" system with an H-pipe and those mufflers would be plenty loud. You could run 2.5", but anything smaller than that is just doing your engine a disservice.

Mount the glasspacks as far forward as possible, and run 2 1/2" behind the axles if you want to have a lot of crack in the pipes. The crack sound comes from constructive interference of the sound waves and is a function of the resonant air column in the pipe and NOT backpressure.

Backpressure is NEVER good.

I agree C130. The 2 1/2 muffler shop restrictive bend exhaust on my Ramcharger cracked so bad it drove me nuts. I added 16" long 3 1/2" dia tips to take the majority of the crack out on the advice of another member. It worked pretty well, but I'm wishing I would have gone with a 3" exhaust on this truck.
