You're right, it definitely needs to go at least another 1" toward the radiator. Driving around at a lower RPM, the car runs around 195, on the highway it doesn't move off of 180.

Your car immediately cools down when air is being moved through the radiator. Some of the suggestions could also help but I tried all those and nothing worked. I had a dual 1" aluminum radiator that did exactly what you are experiencing. I finally tried a dual 1 1/4" radiator and I can now sit in traffic for as long as I need to on a 100 degree day and stay right at 190. I changed nothing else. The system just wanted more volume of fluid.

That's a good point. If the car goes up to 220 and STAYS there, that's not such a terrible situation but in our experience, it's very rare that a car stabilizes at idle in that 220 range. The more likely scenario is that it will continue to creep the longer the car sits. I was not a happy camper at 220. when I saw it creeping to 225 and then 230 etc. nobody is going to be having any fun driving under those circumstances.
Dodge trucks use the same 7 blade fan and clutch set up. I got one from pick & pull with pulley & shroud for about $30.
Thanks everyone for the help! I think I got it taken care of. I got rid of the crappy flex fan that was on there and threw a 6 blade steel fan on it. I took the car out for a quick drive, and then let it idle for about 20 minutes afterwards and it didn't creep up past 180. So I'm hoping I'm in good shape now. I'll know for sure on a really hot day. Comparing the fan blades, the steel fan has a lot wider of a blade, and has more pitch than the flex fan, which also put it a little closer to the radiator which I think helps some. I'm planning on a 60 mile drive for saturday, so that will be the test! Thank again everyone. I appreciate it!

Any one know how to figure the ratio of pulleys ? same size is 1 to one , going smaller on my water pump---------
Divide one diameter by the other. For instance, 7 inches divided by 5 inches is a 1.4 ratio. That means for every turn of the 7 inch pulley, the 5 inch one turns 1.4 times.

I had the same problem when I put my small block mopar in my little Mini truck. little stock tiny datsun radiator ran fine on a highway 3rd stoplight in a row its overheating. Just needed a little more radiator water
