I recently purchased a 67 Dart GT bucket seat automatic console car. It has a 318 that prior owner said came out of a 73 Dart. It has an old Edelbrock intake manifold, old Edelbrock carb, rusty old headers that sound like they are leaking on the passenger side of the engine, and new dual exhaust. The drivers side exhaust and passenger side exhaust are not connected. Blue smoke is coming out of drivers side exhaust and it is making a popping backfiring noise out the drivers side tail pipe. Passenger side exhaust does not do this. What is the cause of the smoke and backfiring from drivers side exhaust? How is this problem corrected? How much will it cost? I live about 20 miles east of downtown LA.

Blue smoke can be caused by bad/worn rings, leaking intake gaskets that allow it to suck oil in from the lifter valley, or possibly very bad worn valve guides. The popping may just be a fouled spark plug on the offending cylinder(s). How much to repair. Sorry but it's absolutely impossible to guess that just from a description on an internet board and the fact that labor rates are different in different cities. It has to be checked out by a qualified mechanic to see what the problem actually is before an estimate could even be close. You can probably tell what cylinder is the problem by just taking out the spark plugs and inspecting them. The bad cylinder(s) will have the plug(s) oiled up.

It's possible that the reason it is smoking is only because of the miss.
(When a cylinder isn't firing they pump oil into the comp chamber.)
The "popping" could be a plug misfire, but I have a feeling it's a bad valve.
(Which also will cause it to pump oil into the cylinder and smoke)

Id bet ya 20 bucks the comp is low, or non existant in that cylinder.

I tend to agree,...Is it all the time or only when cold which would indicate bad valve seals,...but the "popping" does not give me the warm and fuzzies...
