If you don't mind breaking the input shaft to the trans. you can leave it out.

yep needed to stabilize the input shaft -tranny won't last long without it

The Pilot bushing goes in the crank to support the Input shaft.

by the sounds of it......everything was assembled before you noticed it was missing?
ouch.
sorry to say but you need it.
like others have said, without it you are only setting your self up for failure. Might aswell get in there and do it now then have it grenade and take out other parts in the process.
