A month ago my 13 year old nephew said he wants a classic car and wants my help to build it.
I have a 71 Duster up the hill that I had planned on fixing up but this thing with the kid is something more important. I’ve always wanted to have a kid to guide, to mentor. He was all excited about the car and we have discussed plans for it.

I went up the hill to look for something and saw that a big branch of a multi trunk tree had fallen. The first picture shows a 73 Dart that somehow missed damage other than scratches. The Duster though….

I guess it could be worse. It could have landed on the roof.

Daylight was fading but I was curious so I grabbed a chain saw….

Hmm. The hood was hard to open but it looks like it got the worst of it.
The grille was already cracked.

The right fender was untouched and just as crappy as it was before. The left fender took damage at the top.

I can fix all of this.

It could have been a lot worse.

Could easily have been a whole lot worse, you got very lucky that it didn't hit the roof.
Good on you to mentor your nephew, you'll teach him how to do things the right way.

It looked a lot worse when the branch was on it. The pictures with the branch off do look more repairable.

...AND rust repair.
AND everything else. This car has sat in that spot since 2008. It was in a junkyard for years untouched! Everything is roached out. I'm going to put a mild 318 in it along with a basic disc/drum brake setup. I'll start a build thread on it once I pull it down the hill to get started.

Its very cool to see a kid his age excited about classic cars, so many of them nowadays either dont give a rats *** about cars, or they want the fast and furious import stuff. Good for you man, I hope you two have a great time working on it!

That tree stole the engine! Total dick move.

Uncle Kern Dog, if'in we're building a car how come we cuttin' up this tree, choppin' all this wood and tuning up a chainsaw?

well nephew, sometimes that's the way of the world...

glad it was nothing catastrophic man!

I am actually a bit jealous. I had two daughters, and neither one of them were interested in cars. I have a grandson who would probably have been a good candidate, but he lives in Canada. It would be so cool to start from scratch with a young kid on a project car. Enjoy every minute of it.

Thanks, guys.
Yeah, I thought I had a mentor thing going with my brother in law who is 20 years younger.

He lost interest in the car. I bought him out and now the car will be finished and sold.
This other Duster is starting out in about the same level of neglect....Some rust, some body damage, it needs everything.

When I got it, it was complete with it's original 318 and 904. I worked a day's labor building a fence to get it.
I went back and forth on what engine to pick for it. Since it will be his first car, I think a 318 will be fine. I'm thinking dual exhaust for some rumble and a Thermoquad for that great buh-WAAAA. He wants a "Muscle Car" so at least it will sound like one.

It looked really straight. Sorry the tree fell on it.

The kid needs something to fix, that should be a good learning opportunity.

Glad it's repairable. Now show him how to do body repair.

He is an enthusiastic kid. He takes it upon himself to go out and earn money to buy stuff that he wants. I think he just needs direction. He knows very little about cars but he is going to learn.
