just tried to put a spare tire in the trunk of my 72 Demon and it fits but does not allow the cover to sit flat against the trunk. Was there some kind of space saver spare used in these cars?

OEM was a narrow polyglass tire that would fit in there. Radials are wider.

I wondered about the same thing for several years. I've looked at all kinds of tires, and the only thing close to fitting was a temporary "donut" spare from a Jeep Cherokee. I think it was something like a T85-D15 - does that sound about right? The spare tire well is just at 6" deep and about 25"-26" diameter. I think the Jeep is supposed to have the same 5 on 4-1/2" bolt pattern I need.

Let us know if you find a good fit,
Jerry

Thanks to all, and I will.

out of my 69 Dart. It is an E78-14. A 340 could fry those things to the ground.

Coker Tire can sell you the proper size for the trunk to make it fit flat but it won't match what your running.
I saw an old Indy Car (1920's I think ) on I-24 Thursday a few miles out of Chattanooga. Had a big Coker Tire Logo on the hood.

That has bugged me for a while now. My dart has a 70 series spare tire, and the cardboard I bought has never sat right because the tire was too wide.

Now that I'm switching over to big bolt pattern wheels, I'm going to need a new spare. I think I'll run down to pick and pull and get a spare tire out of a Grand Cherokee. They are 5x4.5 bolt pattern and should be plenty skinny. Only thing is I don't know if the diameter will fit in the spare well.

E70-14 is about the same size as a 205-70-14. I think the problem is the shape of a radial isnt as flat as a bias ply.
