I may be getting in over my head, but I think I'm going to try to do this on my own.

I've got a good assortment of handtools, and access to a pretty good variety of pullers and a press. What are the must-haves for doing this?

Also, whats the best book about rebuilding it?

Yes that book and this one:

Also if you have a plug-in or other software to download streaming videos, you can download the 20 or so videos here on youtube:

And do some Google searches. There is a LOT of good info on the web

various sizes of snap ring pliers..

some method to compression large spring in front drum to remove and replace lip seals.

bushing drivers to Remove and replace bushing ...

front pump "sometimes" need slide hammer to be removed.

the YouTube videos were perfect for me I just took the laptop out to the garage and followed along -easy peasy japanesey

All good info. I'd add: a good dial indicator for checking/adjusting end play.

So far we got everything mentioned except the book....this is looking promising.

Thanks for the help!

I have never used any "special" tools in my life for a torqueflite. The ATSG Service Group books are really good too.
