Is there any kits out there that are priced right, i've never done this before, but i have a new Hobart 140 welder just wanting to be used lol, i'm also thinking of narrowing the wheel wells, so what would be the best way of going with the spring re-location, if any of you have done this, please show pics, & any info on how you went about it. Didn't know the best place to post this, so i figured here wouldn't hurt.

here are some pics from when i did my 65 belvedere.

Who makes these kits, anyone other then MP? I'm working with a 71 Dart, so i'm sure i'll need to move the well in too.

If you have the ability, make your own boxes out of 1/8 plate.

The MP boxes I had were horrible and they are thin.

I,m in Ontario,Canada and ordered from the Dodge dealer on Sept.23,no luck by Dec.1 so I posted an ad here and got some from a member for $135.You could make these fairly easy so I took some pics for guys to see.I also did the minitub to my 66 Dart.If you have any questions, you can PM me and I,d be glad to help.

I like the "fab it yourself " approach on these.

I made the boxes for about $10 in steel.

the new perches were around $10

Dont buy the rear hangers from Mancini. The ones i got were junk and the inside of the bolts looked like pot metal (i broke one tightening) .

Then all you need is a nice mig and your good to go

Cool thanks guys, so what gauge steel did you go with? Did you just bend up each end from a flat piece? I already have perches for the springs, i have a local steel/aluminum supply company, if my rear hangers are decent, i'll re-use them.

Pettybludart, from what i'm seeing on the measurements, there as follows, currect me if i'm wrong.

Length (long end) 12.3/4"
Length (short end) 6.1/2"
Width 3.1/2"
Height 4"

Another thing, i'm getting ready to order some Summit Star wheels, should i stay with 15x8", or should i get 15x10", & what back-spaceing?

what is the distance from leaf mount to mount? like middle to middle i guess lol. i will be doing this soon so thanks for the info lol

Yes your correct with the measurements. What car are you doing this on?Duster or Dart? Are you doing the minitub?Need answers for suggesting rim sizes also b.spacing.:happy10:Also PM me your e-mail and I can send some advise I recieved from Rob Epps,if interested?

there are some measurements for the boxes on here above , or moparts. i think i used 1/8 steel .

i started with Weld 15 x 8 with 4.5 back space with 28 x 11.5 ET streets on mine -but that was before i moved in the leafs

right now with springs moved in and mini-tub , i have 15 x 10 welds with 7.5" bs , i think........... id have to go get my measurement book out. its in the garage and its Elevndy billion degrees below zero outside tonight....

So you managed to get a 15x8" under it with a 28" tire, did you have to roll up the outer fender "lip", i don't want to do this, so i'm thinking anything with an outer section of 3.5" will fit with the right tire, so i would think a 15x10 with a 6.5" back-spaceing.

i will dig out my book--might be tomorrow Joe

EDIT -- sorry , i just have the 15 x 10 measurements (7.5" bs) -- and thats with springs moved , mini-tub , and quarter lip trimmed flush . 28 x 11.5 Hoosier QTP tire.

tire to outer quarter 2 3/8"

tire to frame rail 7/8"

tire to leaf spring 1 1/8"

Thanks, would you happen to have any pics of the car from the back under shot?

You have alot of room on the outer lip area at 2.3/8".

I'm curious, did you move the axle rearward on the springs
to get more room in the front of the wheel well?

you will not get a 15x10 with 6.5 bs on there and a stock width a-body rearend...it really depends on what tire you plan on running...something like a 325/50/15 (28x13) will not fit with that backspace...you'll need 7.5 backspace (which limits your wheel choice) or narrow your rearend...as far as wheel width, you need to decide what tire you want to run and then min and max wheel width the manufacturer says is okay for the tire

Thanks for the info petty. Would you happen to have the in side width of the box?

Why not move the leafs back about 1" while your at and center the wheels in the well

After looking things over, don't know if i want to tackle it or not, but who knows, does anyone have pics of where they cut "inside" the wheel well?

I didn't know what the hell I was doing when I installed mine, so I bought the MP kit for my '62 Valiant. I remember having one hell of a hard time figuring out how to install it, even though it came with instructions. I also recall having to make about 4 trips to the local trailer parts supply store to buy additional u-bolts, shackles and other hardware that I needed.

Moving the leafs inward does change the handling. I think it is because it has the effect of raising the rear roll center. (Double-check me on that; I'm not an engineer.) Maybe you don't care about this too much because you're building a drag car(?), but if it's a road car, with the bigger-than-stock rubber that you're going to be installing, if you also install a nice big rear sway bar it will handle like it's glued to the road!
