My machinist took the plug out that was in the side of the block where the 90* oil filter adapter goes on the block. The plug has a square in it for a special tool to remove it. It isn't 1/4" or 3'8". I need to measure it, but I am guessing it is a 5/16" square. Where would I get something to fit that? Never seen anything that size.

Just buy a 3/8 pipe plug that uses an allen wrench.

We ground down a twisted 1/2" to 3/8" socket adapter. Anything should work fine if the plug is already out; per a prior discussion, the real problem is getting a stuck one out after 40+ years!

The tool is called a "drain plug socket", and yes it is 5/16. They can be bought individually, or in a set of various sizes. Get one(s) rated for impact use...they dont break as easy. Grinding down a 3/8" adapter or extension didn't work for me...broke almost instantly!

You'll also find the plugs on the rear of the block are the same thing.

Now I know what the tool is called. Thanks for the info.

McMaster-Carr sells the proper tool, they ship fast.
