SS/K 1965 Valiant

-
Thanks for all the input. I thought that Competition Plus, online mag, did a whole in depth article on Matts car. Can't find it or I'm off base. I'm researching the class for my '65 Dart. This set up should be SS/LA or MA. That should put me in the realm of 283 powered shoebox Chevy's that run either of those classes.

Our 10 second Aspen (318 HP engine) also runs SS/MA.
It is the old Hot Rod Project "Bracket Bird" and then
Rossi/Harroll National Event Winner/Record Holder that
we rescued after sitting in a yard 20+ years.

We aint Skered of no Chebby or Furds!!

You are my Buddy don't get me wrong = BUT Apples to Oranges comparison!

Your car is not a 273 engine with stock compression/Tiny carb/Production Iron
Heads with stock CCs

My STOCK Z06 runs 130MPH plus also but that is not an equal comparison either as
it IS 650HP. If you could get 400HP out of a Superstock (Original 235HP) 273 it would
be a Serious Player!!

Superstock cars are meticulous prepared and optimized race cars that run extremely
quick ETs for their MPH. They often have $10,000 transmissions and $5,000 Clutches or
Convertor and are generally built by gentleman with a lifetime of experience racing these VERY specialized
machines. If one of my Superstocks runs 131.76 MPH, you can count on it to run in the 9s.
It will not run 11's unless you started out in High Gear and have put the Front Runners on the
back by mistake.

We could take that car to any track of your choice AND I will BET you $100,000.00 (I have
that in the safe at the shop) that It WILL NOT run 131 MPH.

Again:
Not a knock on Matt and his beautiful well built Valiant in any way = But I have been going
to the racetrack for over 70 Years and I know a little bit about Superstock Racing. I have been racing
Superstock since my 1964 Max Wedge Belevedere was a late model car.

It’s likely just a misprint. More likely than not 121+ mph, not 131.
Anybody that knows stockers know the cars ET way better than the MPH would show for a typical time.
In other words, with stockers, the MPH is typically low for the ET not high.
No stocker is going to run 130 MPH at 11 flat. Many don’t at even 10 flat.

You do a pretty darn good job of it!

It is now at 201 HP down from 235 HP as I recall.

Can you run the 302 heads as they helped my

318 almost 3 tenths over my old heads.

I can and have run the 302 heads, but as you know, most of them are cracked, I run the 675 heads now, and have been 85 under the index with them.

Yes they often are, generally they do not every leak, BUT I
do not want to spend a bunch of money on cracked heads
and take a chance.

Gregg Luneack who does my 302 Heads passed away last month
so I am really up the Creek without a Paddle.

Looking forward to seeing you again!

John, I know a guy who specializes in stock/ super stock heads. He is very good.
Lives here near me in Michigan, but I know a West coast guy he does heads for on a super stocker who picked up nicely when he started using my buddy.

I currently have a set of heads and Intake at my old friend Don Little's shop. However,
he is slowing down and looking at retirement as he is close to my age. He
is a Former NHRA World Champion and just won the big race at LVMS last
month

I would pay Gregg to do the research and R&D and it would remain
mine alone. Everyone one else would duplicate my heads for all my competitors
and I have wasted my time/money (Often 5 figures) and I am just one of the pack.

I would like to perhaps fly out and meet your Cylinder guy and see his shop if
he is willing to take on work.
