Since I've now dropped my v8 swap plan in favor of doing something more unique and dangerous with a /6 I started pulling it apart over the weekend.

I knew it burned some oil but what I didn't know is that it was burning oil in almost all 6 cylinders due to a leaky leaky head gasket. So everything inside the engine is nice and dirty. This is my first foray into engine rebuilding so I'm really not 100% on what to look for. I took a lot of pictures maybe some people can give some input on how it looks.

So far things don't look to nasty or worn, didn't have a knock or a tick when running. All the pushrods are straight and the cylinder walls look good.

I haven't gotten to the bottom end yet mostly because the engine is sitting on a tire but I'll get to that when I pick up a stand. I'll be leaving it for a while but I'm just trying to get a feel of what I'll be dealing with when I get back from jackson in a october-ish. Plan is to have my dad bring the block and head to the machine shop while I'm gone so I can get it done.

If there is no ring ridge then you are probably in pretty good shape! You might be able to get by with using a glaze breaker on the cylinders and replacing the rings and bearings, if you want to get by on the cheep.

ok well the first thing i noticed is that it looks like dents or pits in the first pic, those would be from pinging or detonation...

second in the third pic unless you changed the angle the piston is in backwards lol... now this actually helps with HP becasue the pistons are ground egg shaped... but you have to do it on all the cyls's just not one lol...

ok since it sounds like your going to to a performacnce build you need to decide if you are going to bore it or not... (summit carries pistons for 12 bucks each up to .080 over)

you need to figure out how far the piston is on the hole with what ever pistons you use so you can figure out compression... so either you just clean up what you have or new, whatever... just find that number out so you can have the block milled X amount to increase compression to a normal number! plan on at least .090 right off the bat tho!

yea I agree, check for any ring ridge, measure the entire thing to see if there's any flat spots, if not hone it out and clean the entire block (especially taking out the freeze plugs and shooting water in there, try to get the scales out and goop that builds up in there)

Still had another 100K left in her. Dumb observation: Do the piston notches go forward in a slant? I thought I read they went toward the back..brain fade?

well every engine they go forward stock but you can reverse them on the rod and it makes them drag in the bores less...

Oh boy I freaking KNEW something had to be wrong with that notch facing a different direction. Funny thing is, this engine has never been taken apart before so that means the factory did that :sad5:

Just feeling it with my fingers there is a little bit of a ring ridge starting so I'll probably have it bored. Starting at a .080 over? I know I read a few /6 build threads where the block was bored much more than with good results.

Since my engine right now is a 198 on the RG block I'm just going to use 225 parts, looking at wiseco forged pistons (probably 3.484) with K1 rods on a 225 crank.

i you are planning on spinning past 6K or a race motor then get the weisco/k1 otherwise save some bucks

PLease let me get at the front of the line for those 198 rods if you dont use them. I 've got a New in the Box Mallory Unilite Distibutor ( Adjustable Mechanical Advance only ) if your radical building your 6. Will buy or trade + possibly

Well the ultimate goal is going to be something that one would look under the hood and go why the hell would you ever do that. Reason for the weisco/k1s is that this is going to be either single or twin turbo'd, single being the easier road but I'd like do a twin setup if I can fab a manifold the way I want it.

Current plan is to HEAVILY modify the stock manifold by essentially cleaving it in half and then doing quite a bit of metalwork with the cast iron. I might try to get in contact with this guy from slantsix and see if I can get a set of his manifolds. It would be easier/less time consuming and probably work better than chopping up a stocker.

I'm also going to be tossing the stock intake in favor of a 4 barrel hyper pak

its funny because i was going to write either past 6K or boost but decided against it! yea with boost its a good idea for sure...

you should check out billdeadman's turbo build and also the turbo toads...

Will do.

Anyone have experience with the EZ EFI kits? They're expensive but money isn't an issue with this build and I've heard nothing but good things about them, plus it would eliminate some of the quirks that come with putting a 4 barrel on a on an /6, like location of the primaries and fuel bowl orientation etc etc

Also going to be removing the fan in favor of an electric setup.

This is gonna be a friggen mean engine when I'm done with it :naka:

if your doing efi talk to none other than Bob Reams @ Imagine injection here in AZ...

he will make a kit from fuel pump to the tune on your engine...

you can call him @ 602-377-4093

he has been doing this a VERY long time and is one of the best...

Hi all,
I just pulled my blown 225 slant super six motor and was wondering if you think it's worth it to get another 225 or upgrade to a 318? What are the pro's and con's and how much work am I really looking at?

you need to post your own thread under the slant six section...
