Was 8 3/4" an option then???

Yes it was, as early as late 65 you could order your car with an 8 3/4", not until the 340 cars came out in 68 was the 8 3/4" standard in any A body, and even then it was only standard in 340 cars!

It wasn't standard on 383 cars also???

Never knew the abody had the 8-3/4 option for 65 and 66. How come the 273 4bbl did not come with them?
When did the Dana 60's come into play for the Big block a-bodies?
S/N: Cosgig, not debating- just curious. I honestly do not know either way. I've never seen an 8-3/4 under an early A-body factory. new one on me.

Yes it was, Karl!! And to Joe, I have a 66 Valiant Signet convertible that cam factory with an 8 3/4"! In 65/66, the 7 1/4" was the only standard rear available, although there was a Suregrip option for the 7 1/4", and more often than not the 4 speed cars got a SG, although still not standard!! A body Danas did not come in A bodies until 68, and only in 4 speed Hemi Darts and Barracudas! It was not offered in any other car with any other motor as far as I'm aware of!

Because the 273 4bbl was only rated at 235 hp and didn't need one... So they were standard 7 1/4" but optional 8 3/4"...

Once you get in the upper hp, you then need to upgrade the 7 1/4" to 8 3/4"... I build a 318 for one of my 68 Barracuda fastbacks with only a 340 cam, 9.2 compression, 4 bbl, dual exhaust with stock exhaust manifolds and broke three 7 1/4" axles within 4 years on a daily driver - not beat... I replaced it with 8 3/4 and drove that car to 500,000 miles with no more axle problems.... The 7 1/4" axle can't handle a 318 with 340 parts it's so weak, but it's ok for a stock slant 6 or 273...

I have a 67 Barracuda fastback 273 4 bbl Formula S that came well loaded with options, being factory trailer tow with 8 3/4" 3.23 sure grip which was part of the trailer tow package...

My dad had a 67 Barracuda Fastback 383 4 speed back in the day, I was too young to know anything about them back then, but I would think, that it was a factory 8 3/4" sure grip axle... He got run off the road with only 6500 miles and the car was totaled back then...

I scrapped out a 66 B-Cuda Formula S a couple years ago, and it had an 8 3/4 323 sure grip in it from the factory. That's why I bought it, was for the rear end, for my 66 Dart project.

I found a guy who has a 8 1/4 suregrip complete and he's wants 450.00 for it...good price ?

Not bad!!! What's the ratio?? I sold a really nice complete 8 1/4" with a 3:55 SG for $500 at the Nats!! He's right in the price range!!!

Cool info.

I have a formula S I bought just for a rebuild but was too far gone so it just sits. Formula s 1966 auto on column with 7-1/4 with sure grip 3.23
