It's an early 20th century "fire bomb" extinguisher. filled with Carbon tetrachloride (most likely) That trigger is hooked to a fusible link - probably lead. When lead melts, spring releases hammer, breaking glass and liquid dumps.

It's a know carcinogen.

Carbon Tet. We used it in tech school to clean brake shoes that were soaked with 80/90.

Yeah.. it's one of those that they decided was a bad idea after we'd been bathing in it for years... like CFC-113a. That stuff sure worked good though

Yes it did. We had all the good stuff. We had a hot tank that if you left pistons and rods in overnight, the rods came out but the pistons were gone.
