Camera phones are the worst but most handy. who would have thought a phone and camera should go together, 30 years ago

Yeah, digital cameras have come a long way but it's still all about the optical quality of the lenses. Phones have gotten reasonably good because of the improvements in the optical chips and much higher mega pixel resolution...but they just don't have the lens quality to ever match a good camera.

My Sony DSC 100HX has only a 25 megapixel optical chip, but it's fairly low noise. The main reason it can take high quality photos is that it has a good Carl Zeiss lens with a true 30x optical zoom. It can also take really good close up photos using the same fixed lens. Here are a couple of examples (the actual images are a lot sharper than the Forum low-res hosting shows).

Well, 30 years ago there were only 3 portable cell phones on the market. They weighed around 1-2 lbs and cost about $3300 each (about $7200 in todays dollars). All they could do is make a phone call and at best store a few dozen phone numbers...

And to most people, the digital camera did not even exist yet. 35mm was going to disposables. Polaroid was the ****. lol
