I'm back for some desperate help. You guys are 100% so far.
I have a 1968 Dart with newish 360/400hp engine.
So a new development , I was doing a little street racing in the valley over thanksgiving with a (70's nova) and had a strange engine problem. Take off was great, nice traction floored in drive got to 5,200 rpm screaming in first gear , then trans shifted into second and engine totally started missing. like it was running out of gas, white smoke I could hear the carb sucking air and no power floored it would bounce to 3,500 rpm and stall back down, ping, rough you name it. I let off the gas and tried again and it recovered some what and I finished, but it never really kicked in. So lost the race big time and I want a rematch. Afterword the car ran fine , I got on it again no problem. Then yesterday I was getting on it from a stop light and it pinged and lugged and stalled again. Now it fine. What do you think carb, vacume , ignition ? Its running a little rough.
Any advice ?

Dale

sounds like ignition with the pinging, where is your timing at? what fuel pump? what carb?

that was GOD saving your life..

ignition probably. MP unit? orange box?

LOL...well hopefully there was no money involved, cuz from the sounds of it GOd couldnt save that

as long as your away from traffic and civilians, i say your good...have fun! and beat em back!

white smoke
Thick or thin?

I'd run through all the ignition after that and then look into the carb. Possible dirt in there hindering performance.

I say fuel system. Lack of sufficient fuel volume.

If you roll out of it, then roll back in does it pick up? If so, it's was likely out of fuel. The pinging was from it most likely going lean.

Cracked is correct about running out of fuel. Also check your float level.

The only reason I didn't go with CB on this is because I have the feeling he has done this street racing before and this problem is new. Otherwise, it's a sound idea.

Sorry, not going to help you endanger innocent people...I hope you decide to take this to a race track instead.

While that is truly the best place to be and where I allways wanna be, truth is, it doesn't happen like that all the time. I do try and brush'em off, but every once in awhile..............

I had a similar problem, car would fall of and ping at the top of 2nd at the track... I could never reproduce it after cause I wasn't running it at WOT for as long (Stop, 1st, 2nd) on the street.

Mine was 2 things, Orange Ignition box (the chrome is for higher RPM) and insufficient fuel pump for demand. (good PSI, but not the volume, needed bigger line and aftermarket pump)

goodluck

Race track wreck paramedics are there in 30 seconds. On the street could be 30 minutes. No track prep on the street. Is it worth risking your car. In Canada they can confiscate your car they tell me. If I could only practice what I preach. Gotta build it to the point theres no sense racing chumps in rustangs and bo ties.

Sounds like a fuel issue, but if your running the orange box, who knows, check both.

Just to clear the air I do realize that racing on non sanctioned roads is not a good idea, however anytime my group of weekend buddies and I get together it happens and we feel we go about it in about as safe a manner as possible. We are ALWAYS in the country or in an industrial area away from innocent people and homes. Anyone who is at a spot with us is there because they chose to be, nobody is forced to do this and we assume full responsibility for our actions, at most we may hit a deer. I know it's not the best thing to do but it is a rush and always was/ will be. What are some of the most infamous mopars? Jimmy Addison's Silver Bullet and Big Willie's Daytona, both extremely active and popular street racers from the day. Call us stupid if you want but we are never under the influence of any substance (excluding sun drop and pizza) and we've got roads prepped better than some tracks. btw if you need a cheap test spot pour some corn syrup on a road on a hot day in line with your tires and in a few hours you've got a great launch pad. One more time

STREET RACING IS NOT A CRIME. . .well it is but, **** it.

(steps down off soap box and wishes a good day to the kind FABO members)

...and we've got roads prepped better than some tracks...
LOL! so do we. i swear i 60ft better on "our" non crossroad 8 miles straightaway then at the track. havn't hit a deer. but i did smoke 2 skunks at around 100mph at the same time. suffice to say.. it didn't smell that bad.
