I just bought a rear/front bumper with brackets off a 72 plymouth duster at a swap meet for a whopping $25 dollars and they are pretty straight with a little chrome peel. Im wondering what would be the easiest way in striping the chrome from them would be? I plan on painting them. Any help is appriciated.

Your local chrome shop can strip them.

Chrome is a combination of nickel, copper and chromium and I don't know how you would do it yourself unless you have an acid tank with the correct acid.

Can they be sanded down? I'm wondering the same thing also.

Same here my bumpers are have some dents and dings in them and was going to straighten them but want to paint them to match the car

Chrome is metal and the effort it would take to remove chrome by sanding would be extensive if not imposable. If the chrome isn't peeling, then you could sand it enough to get epoxy primer to stick but you are still painting over the chrome which would be OK, but if the chrome is peeling, then there is nothing you can do unless you have it stripped off first.

Do you know of any places I see you are fairly local.

I had Gateway plating down on Texas near Jefferson & Gravois (south city) do a few things for me and it all looked pretty good, but they did the bumpers on my uncles 57 Ford and the front looked great but he wasn't happy with the rear, I don't think they had a very good bumper to work with though and you can't expect miracles.

I did ask them about stripping the chrome from a few bike frames and he said there was a minimum charge of $42.50 and I could get a few frames done for that price.

Gateway is also the only place in the St.Louis area that does bumpers. There is a place down in Cuba, but I heard they are extremely high but I never saw their work so it may be worth it.
