Hi all, been a while but I'm back with another question. Few weeks back I changed the fuel filter on my six. I have no idea how long the old one had been there but it was brown. Ever since I changed that filter, my car has stumbled on low to medium acceleration and I cannot get it to stop. I knew the float would hang up in the turns, so today I took off the carb and cleaned the hell of it. I put new gaskets on and put it back together and set everything back up and still I have this annoying problem. Is there any other things I may need to look at ? The plugs and wires cap n rotor are all fine.

Pull your filter off again and look to see if its plugged already. The tank may have varnish build up or crud in it. I plugged 3 big filters in a row on my truck all with in a week. Finally took the tank of and flushed it. No more problems then.
Another thought is trash under the seat/needle of the carb will do this.

Sounds like the new filter is clogged or installed backward. Should have an arrow representing flow direction on it.

I hate to say it, but if it hasn't been done before, the filter sock on the fuel sending unit's pick-up tube might need to be changed. They are the first line of defense in the fuel system.

Before pulling the sending unit unnecessarily, you could run a length of fuel line to the pump from a gas can and see if you get the same stumble. If you do, then it probably isn't a clogged sock. If you don't get the stumble, you might want to check the sock for crud.

Yeah, the other guys covered it well and my input would be in line with their comments. If you got alot of red/brown crap out of the fuel filter your concerns should be more in checking out the tank and line along with and not noted is the pump itself. If this crud gets to the pump it will stop it from working right. As a point of interest I have a nice 70 Swinger with a six in it. Long story short at the start of the season the car would not run. I had a bunch of that crud come out of the filter. The line and pickup were clear (but old) and there was no sock on the pickup to clog. I just put all new stuff on the car, tank, pickup, line, pump, and filter and it all went away. You should have seen what was in the tank! Just get the parts and replace. Much easier than banging your head with the stumble, hard to start, and slow acceleration issues.

I just cured a problem on my Holley 1920 that was causing it to stumble, hard starts and most of the time it would bog unless I rolled on to the throttle. Looked it over and discovered that the accelerator pump was just dribbling. It was so clogged I had to clean it with one of my welding tip cleaners. Haven't had a problem since. Good luck. Mike

thanks for the advice... the carb I totally rebuilt..but I have been thinking about dropping the tank and cleaning it. I dumped some seafoam into the tank to get it started when I bought it...and that seemed to work fine until now. I bet I will keep having this issue until I clean the crap out of that tank. I once got a 54 plymouth savoy started that had been sitting for 30 years deep in the woods just by cleaning out the crud...and replacing all the stuff that likes to rot !!!! Its nasty what gas turns into over time ! :-D
