stupid question about water neck

so i need a new water neck but does the t-stat sit between the neck and the block?

Yes the t stat disc fits into a slight recess within the water neck then bolts to the intake manifold or in the case of a BB the water pump.

little tip, get some weather strip adhesive (like contact cement in a little tube) and glue the t-stat into the housing, then install the whole assembly. This ensures that the t-stat stays in the little recess in the housing and does not slip off center and keep the housing from sealing to the intake.

Hope you aren't using a mopar chrome water neck. They are leakers.
