tachometer reads way to high

i just bought a 67 barracuda with a 340 4 speed and factory tach. the prior owner put the motor in and it has mopar electronic ignition(orange box). the tach reads at least 1000 rpm to high on the freeway and 400 to high at idle. could the newer style ignition be effecting the tach or is it just wore out.
