Tapper to roller cam conversion

-
If you started out with a set of heads that came set up for a HR cam……….and you used all name brand stuff and stayed away from the Chinese lifters and rockers, to buy-
Cam
Lifters
Rockers
Pushrods
Oil pump drive gear

You’ll spend about $2000
$2000 to go LA roller
That is exactly why I chose a magnum over and LA, I couldn't find an LA core hydraulic roller

In my LA, I have a bushing installed at the bottom of my distrib shaft, keeping the gear from riding upward. Don't know if it helps but and old racer told me to do it.

Here's my bronze gear after less than 25 miles. I was running 20w50 Brad Penn oil, switched to melanized gear and 10w40 and all is fine. Based on my experience I would not run a bronze gear on the street. BTW, solid roller cam.

Agree. Melanized gear and/or thinner oil fixed the problem, no wear at all on the gear now.

I feel like the bronze gear situation is similar to the flat tappet cam & lifter situation……..in that:

Things that used to be pretty reliable, aren’t necessarily that reliable anymore.
