i'm get ready to put my rebuilt 340 motor back in the car. Do I need to put Teflon tape or pipe dope on the threads for the water temperature and oil senders? Thanks

Same here on the teflon. I use gasket sealer for the tips of the t stat bolts too.

There are quite a few acceptable thread sealants and Teflon tape is one of them, but always use something or you'll likely be doing it all over again.

personally I don't like tape, seen too many oil sumps in turbine units at work with bits if tape in the base from piping....I like the Teflon sealant compound from Loctite or masters pro dope

Permatex thread sealant works well, just put aftermarket gauges in my bronco and not a drop of oil from the autometer sending unit

...teflon is a lubricant..it does not seal
.It will allows a pipe thread to thread farther and seal itself.
now i've probably started an argument..but the bottom
line is your fitting shouldn't leak...

I would not use tape either. Sometimes it can even cause aluminum castings to crack around the fitting, if there is a thin wall. The liquid teflon pipe dope is much better/safer.

I like RTV on something going into water or coolant. Just personal preference.

Last few new senders I purchased already had sealant painted on the threads.

I'm a fan of Permatex Aviation Form A Gasket. Used it when putting my motor and transmission back together.

My second favorite sealant is Permatex Ultra Gray, never an issue.

Permatex #2 also works very well and is cheaper than the rest.

I'm not a fan of teflon tape on an engine, I use ARP teflon pipe sealant or the same from Permatex.
