Another option is to solder leads on the switch and install both male and female connectors about 6 inches behind it. those male and female connectors could come from a much later model column mounted switch which has adequate wire gauge, etc..
Somewhat extreme measure, or at least extra labor to effect repair but we'll do what we have to do.
If we can't fix it it aint broke.
