Here is my forward drum from my torqueflite 727. This is my first rebuild. it’s going pretty well, but I am slightly worried about this drum surface. It’s very smooth but it seems to have slight pitting. And I mean very slight can’t hang my fingernail on it slight. But it is there. Does the band even fully ride in these two areas of concern? Will I soon wear my new band out? My video I’m going by says do not use Emory on this facing. I did take some atf and green scotch bright pad and did some cleaning to it. Any ideas? Thanks

The first pic you show with the key pointing at the mark worries me .
I’m not certain how it would work out .

The other pic of the other side is beyond where the band rides,,,it shouldn’t cause any problems .
Myself,,,,if I was using this transmission for a performance application,,,I would replace the drum .
If it was a high mileage daily driver,,,,,you won’t ever hurt the new band .

I would use some 400 grit cloth,,,,and then go with the Scotchbrite .
At least hit the rough patches with the 400,,,,,and then polish the rest .

Stock Drums and even Cores are not expensive.

I would not use it myself, but I am tired of R and R
Transmission after 70 years if I gamble on something.

Agree with GTX John. Would not use that drum. The damaged areas might grab the band material & cause premature wear. The drum is rotating at high speed when the band grabs it...

Yes it’s a weekend driver with a non performance 318. I ve found on another site someone referenced the Monroe tf book that one CAN use Emory cloth on this.

I would have some polish it on a lathe (so its spinning) the same as you would do a crankshaft to get the RIGHT surface before i would work on individual spots with emery paper.
And yes, GTXJohn is telling you the right answer.... it would be different if you were talking about a part thats difficult to replace.

Just get another one from WIT Transmissions. I wouldn't run it.

You can probably find a cheap good used one from someone who's upgraded to a billet drum. I know I have one in my parts bins somewhere from my 727 build. Put a wanted add up - I'm sure you'll have several responses pretty quickly.

Is there a machine shop near by? Chuck it up and make a pass. A few thousands may clean it up. The band will never know.

Toolmanmike….. finally a voice of reason. A lil sandpaper love and it’ll be fine. A greater concern to me would be that the sealing surfaces where the apply piston ride. If they’re good send it!
