Thermostat Install

I will be swapping an aluminum intake & 4-bbl onto my 318. Prior to the swap I want to install the thermostat with RTV.

The question is:

Does the thermostat's spring face down into the manifold?

Or, does the thermostat's spring face up into the thermostat housing?

i dont like RTV. i use permatex #2. what i do is clean all the surfaces. put a thin coat of #2 on both sides of the stat flange. put it into the stat housing and twist it a little. then put the gasket on the stat housing. so you have NO sealer on surface of the gasket that seals to the manifold. that way if you have to take it a part the gasket might still be usable. that way the next time you take it apart the surface you have to clean is on the bench not the engine.
