Have a 1973 Dart Swinger 318 Auto no air. Have a 195 thermostat. Would it run any cooler with a 180 thermostat?

If your radiator is in good shape, then yes, it should run about 15 degrees cooler. In a properly working cooling system, the thermostat setting can be thought of as the "low limit"

Thanks.

Define "run any cooler"? If it is running 230° in heavy traffic on a hot day it'll still run 230° in heavy traffic on a hot day, no matter what thermostat is in it. A thermostat can't make an engine get less hot. All it can do is limit how cold it can run.

^^^^^^This cant be repeated enough...^^^^

Most folls just dont understand hiw the cooling system works.

Some times a higher temp thermostat will lower operating temp beacuse the water gets to sit in the radiator but once that sucker is open, its open unless you got a great big fan......

:)

Think of the thermostat as a gate that keeps your dogs from running around your house.
The dogs (water realy want to run around but the gate keeps em locked in the back yard.)

Now the gate opens they make one lap and the gate closes. They sit and cool off then the gate opens again and they run.

If the gate is open they just run continuously.

You want that gate to close.

In the engine you have hot water, held in by the thermostat, in the radiator you have cool water.
The engine heats up, the gate opens and the hot water changes place with the cool water, gate closes and we start over.

Get it?

Was this NOT a topic of discussion last week?

Beg to differ. Put a 180 thermostat in on the road running 10-15 degrees cooler in traffic running 10 degrees cooler. Anyway it does run cooler.

if your cooling system is all in good shape, them it will run cooler.but if,say your radiator is plugged a little and your running a little warm now, putting a lower temp stat will not help

Thanks it did help had the radiator recored it is only a 19” radiator wish I would have went to a 22”. Oh well hindsight.

Sounds O.K. to me. You are not fighting an overheating problem. Because your cooling system has the ability to run at less than 190-195, it works. Like I said, the thermostat limits how "cold" it can run.
