THREAD SIZE NEEDED

Hi Folks

Can anyone tell me the the diameter and pitch of the OEM strut rod (bushing end) of a 1971 Demon. I believe that they are the fine thread ones.

P.S. Are the nuts and/or shaft an interference fit, or can I just chase both sets of threads with a standard tap and die?

Go to harbor freight get a whole set, you will use them often..

I think the nuts are pretty aggressive pinch nuts on the front end.

Maybe think about scoring an undamaged one off one of the members on the site..

I believe that the nuts on both ends are the only areas that are threaded.

We used to grind down the shoulder/stop for the rear "washer", run the dye all the way past the missing stop, add another nut, the the rear-most washer, viola, adjustable strut-rod .

the shaft is a light interference fit at the shoulder where it goes into the control arm. the shouldered nut there is standard. the large nut at the front is somewhat interference fit. not full on stover, but definitely has some toofs to it.

So if I chase the nut and the shaft (bushing end), would a little blue loctite on the threads suffice...Or does it matter? Chasing would defeat the interference fit would it not?

yeah, you'd probably be fine. maybe get crazy and throw a little red on there if you're feeling saucy.

chasing the shaft (giggles) won't matter, but cutting new threads on the nut will. you could also peen the nut after chasing it.
