Can anyone tell me where to set the timing on my 440. I have been setting it by ear because the timing tab was gone when we built it and I just now put a new timing tab on it. It is a 440 .030. I have a 3000 stall in it.I am running a 509/292 purple cam and an Accel dist.I was told 34-36* was close but I dont know if that is correct. I have no books on this. I dont know what else needed to know but I would like to get it set right. Thanks

Timing can be a pretty individualistic setup. So what compression is the engine? What ignition/distributor do you have? What rear gears?

Street car? If so, total timing method is the wrong way to do it.

My guess, it's going to like 16-22 initial and about 34-36 total.

Unless it has an appreciable amount of compression, it may need a lot of timing. That camshaft bleeds off a boatload of cylinder pressure.

I am running Keith Black flat top pistons. I assume te compression is about 10:1. The distributor is an accel and it has a MSD 6AL box. I just put the 3:23 gears back in it.I dont have a tach but I am guessing that around 3000 -3500 RPM the engine shakes more that it should is why I know the timing is way off. When I am running it and get down on it it falls on its face and kinda backs out some.

ran the RPM's up to 3800 and set the timing at about 35*. The carb is loading up so I need to fine tune it. I should be in great shape now. Thanks

When you want to get more in depth and work on maximizing the way it runs let us know. then you can actually figure out and properly set up a timing curve for it.
