Timing help needed

I need some help with timing the engine on my 360.Im not sure what kind of cam is in it but Im pretty sure its not stock.I was trying to use a regular timing light but the mark on the balancer is way below the timing marks on the block and I cant seem to move it up towards the timing marks without it dying.There a way I can use a vacuum gauge to set my timing?Im familiar with adjusting initial timing on stock engines but kinda clueless on setting advances and such.Any help would be appreciated.

First step it to buy a timing tape or the least expensive is to borrow a dial back timing light.
