I have a little too much play in the manual steering on my 71 Dart Swinger /6.

Any suggestions for how to improve this? or what to try first?

Thanks!

When atempting these sort of repairs A factory service manual is the very best tool one could have. There is a link to a free download here somewhere.

Agreed. The correct adjustment procedure is in there with detailed pictures. Just adjusting that top screw like the monkeys at the local tire shop do is not gonna fix it.

Don't jump right in and adjust the gearbox. It should be the last thing to look at. It is usually the last thing to go bad. Have a front end shop check it out if you don't feel comfortable doing it yourself. Have a friend move the wheel back and forth while you look for slop in every part that moves. The steering coupler is noted for wearing out as well as every joint in the steering linkage. You looseness is probably not just one thing. It all wears out together.tmm
