AND NOW another annoying story from the old days

When I got out of the Navy I was working for a parts store near a ski mountain. Some outfit got some of those used pickup/ van cab/ widebody busses, 1T. Used them to run customers up and down to the ski lodge from town.

Someone brought a disc rotor in off one, and in 74-75 these were "fairly new" items. They wanted it turned, and the thing had been worn down bad and we did not have documentation on them. I drilled a 1/8" inspection hole in the web connecting the brake surface to the hub center and determined "it was way WAY too thin" and gave it back to the customer

Sometime later, someone came in with it IN TWO PIECES. They were threatening to sue, etc. I told them "you better have a receipt for us turning it because we didn't--we rejected it." I recognized it by the drilled inspection hole. Never heard from them again.

I always remove the brake system
All it does is add weight and slow you down
 
Customer: "But it still stops. Why do I need brakes?"
 
I'm familiar with the term "pizza cutters" when referring to the skinny fronts on a race car, but this takes it to a whole new level.
 
Had a drum brake blow the ring off on the front because it was cut too thin. On an old gmc 1/2 ton only going about 25 mph. Steering wheel went to lock smacking my fingers in the spokes. Never crashed got it back under control but hand swollen like a baseball mitt. No more machining rotors or drums for this guy.
 
Saw one where center web at the hub rusted through. Rotor rusted to pads. Spun wheel during a service and rotor stayed stationary. Boss let it out the door like that,i wanted to put it out of service.

my sister wore out a set of pads so bad one side was gone and piston was doing the stopping.

drove one in shop, and rotor disentegrated as i was driving it into my bay. Had to pick up the chunks,left a trail of parts.

Brakes are really neglected, i think mostly because it can get expensive.
