Just took my coan converter to my trans guy while he is rebuilding my 904 and I got a surprise. The balanced converter I bought for my 360 doesnt match the stock converter coming out which does not have a balance weight. Can a 360 be internally balanced by using a 340 crank? The damper isnt a big unit, so how can this be balanced? Thanks.

stock converter should have weights on it for externally balanced 360

Yes..a 360 can be internally balanced...but a 340 crank will not fit it since they have different main bearing size.,,,mallory metal will need to be added to the 360 crank...

If the coan converter has no weights on it...USE the B&M flexplate for a 360/904 combo....

Craig at Coan told me about those flexplates on the phone today. The converter that came out wasnt weighted so my trans guy said to cut the weight off the new one. Craig agreed, I should have it completed by tomorrow or Wednesday.

What flexplate was on the car?

And the damper/balancer on the front...is it weight?

They said a stock flexplate. If I recall my damper is maybe an inch thick. Would an externally balanced 360 have a wider damper?

360 balancer looks strange, it either has a huge scallop out the front or back or it has a weighted side. Aftermarket balancers are almost all neutral but a weight is bolted in for a 360. Plys they have. Weighted flywheel/balancer. Keep them all together and no worries.

With all the contradictions you have, are you sure that it was actually IN balance when you tore it down?

What is the history of this engine? Who built it? etc??

Also, this an LA or Magnum?

Yes...need to check to see if it is internally balanced...

Yes I have been driving it since I bought it in June. Idles smooth Just put a 268 xe cam in, pro mag rockers and now the converter to go with the cam. It was built when I got it, but the file that came with it says:71 360 block .040 over reconditioned rods 9.5 comp,1973 j heads with 202's performer rpm, I just put a 650 thunder on in place of the 1406, stock manifolds. One of the best mopars I have ever owned in terms of hiway cruising. smooth and fairly quiet at 70 mph.

Well, LOL nothing you just posted has anything to do with balance. I don't know what 'ta tell ya

................post a few pics of the damper and flex plate......since the trans is out check to see IF it says 360 on the drivers side behind where the starter would be......kim.......

Just left the shop and they had 2 vintage dodges in there at once! Mine does indeed have the scalloped flexplate Pishta. Sorry for the confusion, I went with the info that I was given. Glad the mystery is over . Thanks all.

If a shop gave me misinformation like that I think I'd be looking for a different shop. A scalloped aftermarket flex plate looks NOTHING at all like a stock flex plate. Good thing they had another to compare it with or hard telling what kind of a mess they'd have had it in

No, what I meant was they were working on 2 1960s torqueflites at the same time and initially he thought mine was the stock flexplate. Much relieved now, the car is ready. Its actually a friends shop and a very good shop at that.
